I may be a little biased here as I play in That Legendary Wooden Lion (Roy Weards band). I got there in the afternoon and saw Kate Newleys band - she's a great voice & stage presence, backed by a competent band (especially their drummer Tony!). Next up were Slam - an old fashioned 'pub' style band, again an engaging band who went down well with their audience (probably all relatives

)
We were up next and had a great time (one of only 2 bands doing original numbers

). We had Chris Mott back on drums and he was on fire - he must have been missing playing the previuous few gigs. Tony Morely (Jefferson Starship / Quicksilver Messenger Service amongst others, who has been filling in on drums for us recently, played accoustic 12 string on one number. We went down well & we all enjoyed it - good to see old friends (one who we'd not seen for over 20 years - hello Mouse) as well as meet new ones. Shame it wasn't dark when we played as we could have made full use of the excellent light show there (well done Cliff).
Next up were Praying Mantis - they put on a great professional show - great musicianship and stage presence. Never one of my favourite bands but they were certainly good live - our bass player (Chris Cottage thought they were excellent).
Next band were Denis Stratton & Dave Edwards (with drummer & bass player) doing their Iron Maiden tribute - again most enjoyable with both Denis & Dave displaying great guitar craft, the audience loved them.
I didn't stay to see Oliver Dawson's Saxon as we had a long drive back to Saffron Walden (ok not that long but we'd had a hectic weekend). The reports I got back were that Saxon put on a top rate show, full of great musical skill and rock posturing.
Overall it was an excellent weekend with great acts and an appreciative audience. We're looking forward to more of them.
Special thanks should go out to Steve the Wrekka & Roy Weard for doing the sound for the bands, the security who were friendly (yet assertive) and the staff at the Bridgehouse who were as charming & accomodating as ever.
