Congratulation to Iron Maiden winning the Brits award tonight ,best British live act,.Maiden began the Career at the Bridge House in 1976,and to this day  Steve Harris the founded member ,song writer and Bass Player,is still q
good friend to this day,There Manager Rob Smallwood must take a lot of the credit also,he signed them in about 1978 and is still there Manager today,
but it was Steve who arrange the style and determination to make success a possibility, and he did .We must not forget our big favourite Dennis Stratton who joined for a year, and his input lasted,T.M

Was never in doubt. As long as it was truly a fans vote, then Maiden would win.
Maiden fans would get behind them "wherever you are, Iron Maiden's gonna get you, no matter how far."
It has been that way since the fans followed them all over London, the UK, Europe, America, The World and now finally, the recognition back home.

P.S. Sorry if it took over the wrong post - Blame Terry!

Is everybody tone deaf? Bruce cant sing! Its embarrassing. Ist album was ok. The NWOBHM is to heavy rock, what all the dodgy mohicans were to punk. This is only my opinion.

You Punk Mob was the reason, they moved to The Ruskin, and when i advertised Erazerhead a lot of the hippies turned up,thinking it must be a heavy band with a name like that. you riGht about Maiden
Heavy Rock  not ,metal, but i tell you what, they pulled a young audience (with long hair).AND well behave .T.M

Hello Terry, for the last three years I have been listening to planet rock all day, every day (there isnt a planet punk and probably never will be). I like most of it but cant stand any of the NWOBHM especially Iron Maiden. I dont know any other musicians who like them either! Its just millions of fans who must be tuned in to something we cant hear (emporers new clothes?). As I said before I am pleased for them and wish them all the best but it makes me cringe.

Yes, it's me again. Apologies for plastering posts all over the forum but everytime I read something new it stirs up more memories. Several of which are Iron Maiden related.

Some time after my band Tush broke up I went into the musical doldrums. Just couldn't find a band so decided to form my own. I recruited an old drummer mate and set about advertising for more members. I won't go into the whole story except to say the band, called "Gibraltar", at one time or another featured former Maiden guys Dennis Wilcock, Ron Matthews, Bob Sawyer and Tony Parsons. To compound the Maiden association we also had a long residency down at the Ruskin Arms during 1980/81.

I went to see Iron Maiden at the Music Machine, supported by Praying Mantis, just before Tony P got the Spanish Archer (El Bow anyone???).

Oddly enough, to me Maiden still come across as the pub band I remember them as but obviously now playing on much bigger stages. So that would seem to suggest they haven't changed at all. Nice to see that when stardom can easily go to people's heads!  Wink

Cheers,
Tony.

P.S. In another bizarre twist of Maiden fate, I also used to know their graphic artist Derek quite well. He used to live no more than a few hundred yards away from me, back in my Muswell Hill days.

Hey, great info Tony! I knew Wilcock had played in Gibraltar but I didn't about the other guys. I think it was his last band before abandon music... But I don't know nothing more about Gibraltar.

Hi Lira, I have some demo tracks from the Gibraltar days that I'm currently preparing for distribution. To be honest I never thought they would see the light of day again but happy to share them out to anyone who is interested. I also have a lot of photos of the band taken at the Ruskin Arms back in the day.
Cheers,
Tony.

Hi Terry,

Sadly no pictures of Joe that I can recall but will have a rummage. I remember him well though, very nice guy and very supportive all the time we played there. Even when we invited the biker regulars to have a foam and flour fight with the band, the place was a total mess. Joe just smiled at us at the end of the gig and asked if we wouldn't mind helping with the clearing up. Which we did gladly. We still got asked back to play. The place has been pulled down, another piece of British musical history that's gone forever sadly.

Cheers,
Tony.

Two men who Steve Harris should be very grateful to (and no doubt is).

I came across the Melody Maker issue where the Maiden baton was passed from the Bridge House to the Ruskin Arms.

Is that Lee Drury's band the Corvettes supporting Little Rooster on the 20th

The above Bridge House date was I think the last time Maiden played there. It was possibly Paul Dianno's first gig with Maiden and also guitarist Paul "Mad Mac" Cairns first gig as well.

I think the last time Maiden played the Ruskin Arms was 23 December 1981. By this time Paul Dianno had left and Bruce Dickinson was the vocalist.
