During the BH days I was living in East Ham and used to frequent The Cock Hotel (amongst other pubs, The Denmark, Dukes Head, The Ruskin, etc) Terry's brother Mick was the guvnor at the time. The music was somewhat different to the BH namely Fred & Del at the weekends, and some bloke who was a dapper dresser who used to jump about the (tiny) stage, he had a decent voice though as I recall.

I Live in Custom House now and it's sad to think of all the drinking haunts that are now no longer going, Pubs/drinkers like:
Canning Town
The Royal Oak
The Chandelier
The Old Rose
The Norseman club
East Ham
The Cock Hotel
The Burnell (anyone remember The Mission Bells?)
Oh well........
A quick question for Terry, do the names Morrie Vickers, and Ivan Drew ring any bells?

Hi John.you right to many pubs being raized to the ground, most to make way for housing,I believe this is the trouble we are having with the kids of today, they are out on the streets with no were to go.get bored so go looking for a fight, instead of looking to hear a band in some pub ,when they are in pubs.overall they are safe.
you forgot to mention in Custom house the Nottingham arms, this has fond memories for me,my father and Brothers  local for many years,My future Brother in law Bill Carty was the manager,,He met and married my baby sister Ann,he also managed the Burnell,The Mission Bells when they retired ,at my other brother inlaw Joe Lucy The Ruskin, i put him in contact with Iron Maiden, and they started rocking at the ruskin.which had its last gig on Friday and is to be raized to the ground, for housing ,Brother  Mick at the Cock,we made a Album with Fred n Dell, not rock n roll ,but good music,Remember Mick also had Brian Poole gigging there,he came to the bridge house and played for us after he left the Tremoloes .Morrie Vickers manage the Royal Oak in canning town ,were he trained Ivan he moved to the Tarpots in Benfleet ,and  i promoted gigs there, any  one remember the Paramounts who changed there name to ? Regards Terry M
.jOHN is there a Tommy and  his brother Ron in your family?

Hi Terry , your  too right about all the pubs closing.
The Nottingham arms is just down the lane to me, and has been closed 10 years or more now.
And a big shame that the Ruskin has gone, i recall seeing Iron maiden in 1980,and was they loud!!!!
I am depressed how live music seems to be dying out now.

Was the Paramounts the band that went on to be Wayne fontana and the mindbenders?..who featured a young Eric stewrat who went on to be in 10 cc?
Cheers Terry and all  Grin Grin Grin

Hi Terry,
Glad you remember Morrie, he was a good mate of my Dad's and like an uncle to me and my brother & sis, He moved to Wales years ago and opened a Hotel, my old man went and fitted it out for him (we are all Carpenters, but I am the last in the line, my Son's a pen pusher!), believe he has passed away sadly. I used to drink with Ivan in the Denmark Arms wot a character he was!

Yeah, I forgot the Nott I used to drink there lunch times while I was contracting to the council refurbishing the houses off PR Lane. Do you remember a barmaid called Shirley? a game old girl if ever there was one, last time I saw her she was working in the Cranwell club in Plaistow.

As for family connections, well my surname is Hoadley you may recall Hoadley's metals which was next to the Silvertown way flyover I am related but not closely, and yes Tommy and Ron both ring a bell though I've never met them.

I have my own links to the music biz I used to be part of the East Ham crew that looked after the stage area at Hammersmith Odeon in the 70's, we did , Quo, Ian Dury & the Blockheads, Kate Bush, Motorhead (Lemmy is a nutter, and I had to reprimand Harvey Goldsmith for dancing on his chair in the circle, no one was allowed to jump about in the circle for fear of it collapsing), Sister Sledge (loads of trouble at that one), and many more that I can't recall at the moment.

I went on to making and repairing electric guitars for a few years until I got married, and had to work for a living. music went on the back burner until 1996 when I went to the Guildhall University for four years to learn how to make acoustic guitars, I graduated in 2000 with a HND, and a BSc Hons in musical instrument technology.

It's gone on the back burner again for work reasons, but I still keep my hand in,cos guitars are a passion for me.

Best Regards,
John H

The mention of the Burnell brings back a few memories as I used to go in there sometimes in the mid 80's when they used to have old-school rock&roll bands in there and it was full of teddy boys-we used to go there for a change of scene from the heavy metal of the Ruskin (read that as there were different girls to try and pull Wink)
We also used to go to the Three Rabbits in Manor Park, Oscars at Newbury Park, and the Kings in Ilford when they were running it as a rock club-all of these places have now gone. Does anyone know if the Royal Standard in Walthamstow is still going? If it is it's probably the last of my old haunts that is Sad

I probably would never have gone to any of them again anyway as I live out in Suffolk now but it would have been nice to think that they were still going.
Some more that I forgot to mention were the Marquee Club (which has gone ,come back and gone again more times than I can count). The Nashville, which is now called The Famous Three Kings but isn't anything like it used to be and not worth visiting, and the Dagenham Roundhouse-the pubs still there but they stopped having good bands many years ago.

The problem is called white flight. It happened to New York in the early 70s. CBGBs was almost the only place left when the punk movement began back in 75 over there.
As everyone gets sick of the zoo that is east london they inevitably move on to essex, spain or wherever they can afford to go.
They are replaced by non drinking muslims who wouldnt be seen dead in a pub, or heavy drinking eastern europeans who buy it cheap and drink it in the park!
Sadly that is the cause of all our old haunts closing down.
Even if they were still there it wouldnt be the same now. Cant imagine what chav music might sound like!
Any ideas?

For me it wasn't that I got sick of London just that I got priced out of the market. When I moved to Suffolk it was purely down to the fact that I could afford a grotty flat in a bad part of town or for pretty much the same money get a nice 3-bed semi out here and be able to commute to work in London on the inter-city(even that was only possible by my firm paying for a big lump of the train fare). Having said that after living here for 10 years there's no way I'd move back to London or any other city as I finally feel part of the community-I have loads of friends neighbours who talk to me, I can walk into my local pub or shops and know most people by name, and the crime rate here is much lower.

Terry I remember Stray, they used to play the Dagenham Roundhouse regularly and it was there that I first saw them back when I was 17 and didn't even know the Bridgehouse existed!

Dave, im still here in the arse end (east ham) and none of my neighbours speak english!
We bought our gaff in 81 so it wasnt a problem like now.
I would rather be in a little hamlet in southern france as that seems more like the world that you live in, and hopefully in a few years I will be able to do so.
Its funny about the dag roundhouse. It was on my doorstep but I only ever went to the other roundhouse, near camden. Back then we wanted to escape from the east end and we only ever headed in.
