Hi, I'm new to this forum and really glad I found it!

I'm looking for info on my dad, Fred Jackson a boxer from Custom House (light-heavyweight 1951-1958) and landlord of the Lord Raglan pub in Plaistow, apparently good mates with you Terry? Do you remember him? Or anyone else for that matter.

Thanks, looking forward to any replies.

Alex Jackson

Great to hear from you Terry. I'll definately be watching out for the book.

I'm also currently researching for a documentary I would like to make about my Dad. You say you remember quite a bit about him, is there anything that stands out particulary? Would you know where he trained for example? And would you know how I could go about contacting other mates of yours and his - Terry Spinks and Mark Berry?

If you wouldn't mind me contacting you directly I'd love to know more about my Dad's past. Please could you let me know if this is ok. You should be able to contact me via my email address as I think its visible on this forum.

Thanks  Smiley

All I know is that his manager was Al Phillips and that he trained in Canning Town.

Thanks for this, I really appreciate it!

I've just searched round a little more and someone has told me that he may have been training in the Canonbury/Highbury area. Don't know if this would ring any bells.

What was the training regime like for boxers in the 50s/60s? Is there a big difference from how it is today?

As far as boxing gyms go,the only ones you can remember are the ones you trained in yourself,in my case The Thomas a beckett, old kent rd.Kliens later named the Oylimpic gym,in fitzroy square, and the Duke of Fife in Forest gate.
there was many more, generally above pubs,,one in Stepney,.
Us boxers in the 50s and before ,more or less traind ourselves,in the gym you would have a trainer telling you what to do,against the guy you were sparing with, he never told you what to try out for the opponent you were facing, Later.after training they would say ,dont eat this dont drink no sex.do your roadwork in the morning see you in the gym tomorrow at 1 oclock..then he would leave you to your own devises ,did we do as we were told sometimes. But not always?
Today they are much more prepared they even know how much body fat you have in your body, and what and how much to eat.fighter today are much fitter and stronger than ever  we was,but i do think we were more skillfull.Regards T.M

Hi Terry,

I think I found which gym he trained at using the old Kelly's telephone directories. Al's Gym on Essex Rd in Canonbury apparently matches up. Have you heard of it?

Would it be possible for me to email you directly regarding other info about my Dad?

Thanks,
Alex

Hi Terry,

Hope you are well. It's been quite a while since I spoke to you last...

Yes, I did make the film about my dad.
A shame you couldn't make it to the LEBA meeting, hopefully in the future we'll bump into each other.

How is your book going? I'd be very interested in reading it.

I used to use the Raglan a lot in the early 70's and was very pally with Frddie. I knew his wife Pat and family well and was at the wedding of his daughter Sheila to a good mate of mine Alan Braithwaite. I would like to hear what happened to Fred and family as I lost touch when I moved to Norfolk in 1976,
All best
