Borgbaiter, I must have seen you about at the Electrix gigs as I was sat at the lighting desk for many of them. My mate John owned the light rig, he was quite tall with long fairish hair and a nose that you couldn't miss while I was the shorter one with long dark hair, normally wearing a leather jacket and at many of the Ruskin gigs had my Ducati 900 parked right outside the door-alot of people knew me because of that bike, it was so loud that it could be heard over the noise of the bands!

hi dave

was never a biker so wouldnt have seen your bike:-). lights were always good tho. i was a skiny little runt back then. used to be down the front headbanging.

O`i.you guys the Ruskin arm was my brother in laws pub.Joe Lucy the lonsdale belt winner who won the lightweight boxing champion of Gt Britain.Joey got the dreaded C and died in 1991 age 60.He was a lovely guy,and one of the things i regret was giving him Iron Maiden, when he was looking for a band, now Lee Dury informs us he played there,Dogwatch as well, the only problem i had over this was ,why would the customers pay to see these bands at the Bridge, when they could see them at the ruskin for free,so good job i never new The corvettes played there,or they would not have got any gigs at the Bridge.did Erazerhead ever play there.T.M

hi

i mainly saw the electrix. saw desolation angels there only other name i can recall was a bunch of nutters called aunt may.

only gig i ever left in a hurry. after a few songs the singer started axing (with a long firemans axe) up some stuffed toys and dolls then he proceeded to carry on smashing up all the tables and chairs :-). only a hand full of us watching and at this time we wandered to the bar very descretely.

never heard of them again.

Desolation Angels were a band that we did loads of work with right across Southern England but I don't recall them playing the Bridgehouse. They moved to the U.S. sometime in the late 80's where I gather they were quite succesful for a time.

I remember Joe Lucy very well and he was a lovely mann. Also his son Tom. Dogwatch played at the Ruskin every Sunday and occassional Fridays & Saturdays for around 2 years. Last Post also played many gigs there

We also used to rent out the Dogwatch PA & lights to other bands that were playing there.

Wooden Lion played recently at The Ruskin and I am afraid to say that our expectations of returning to Roy's "sprirtual home" far exceeded the reality.

There is now a 5k house PA that if it all worked would be more than adequate. Unfortunatly it doesn't.

Ah well. Time rolls on

So the Ruskin's gone too! I remember when I first went there, I was just 18 at the time and we had just started hanging out at Anna's Cafe over the road which was a sort of coffee bar at night.I think it was Tom who came over and told us that they had a rock band playing at the weekend and we would all be welcome. It was on the first night I was in there some bloke told us about the Bridgehouse which lead me down the road to Canning Town Smiley
I have fond memories of Joe and Tom, when Tom was first talking about becoming a stuntman he asked me to teach him to ride a bike as he had ideas about doing bike stunts although we never did get round to it. I'm glad he's doing well Smiley

I do wonder what's going to become of the music scene in this country with so many venues closing, it seems to be happening all over. I can't see how young bands will get experienced and hone their art if there's nowhere for them to play live Sad

yes good to hear the tracks ,after all that time,i wonder if Cazz is still playing?,any more cuttings re the bridge house, thanks for your help Borg.T.M

Been searching for some news/a contact on this lot for years!!

Loved the band. Only got a few live tracks two of which I recorded myself.

But, have covered three of their songs in a punk band which I've been playing with this year. All the songs are performed/arranged from my hazy memory of the Ruskins in the early 80's - along side of the live tracks, so how much they relate to the originals, I'm not 100% sure. But loved playing them - and would love a contact for Kaz or Johnny Reggae. And/Or a copy of any of their material?Demos/Live?? Anyone able to help on that one?

You can see/hear the Underclass versions (video from the new bridhouse 2) at:

Cheers,

Stuart.

I've actually got a little update on this!!! Just recently Simon Mockett who was World Exit's drummer contacted me on facebook and he's now drumming for 90% Proof while Tony Clark who used to be the bass player for Electrix and World Exit is now their guitarist. Don't know if anyone on here remembers 90% Proof as I don't think they were formed until after the Bridgehouse closed but they were regulars at the Ruskin and also played the Royal Standard and Oscars at Newbury Park. They have a page on facebook and I believe they have a few gigs coming up in the Southend area if anyone wants to catch them.
